The Odd Couple (2018)

2020 Theater Season

Westcliffe Center
for the Performing Arts

The Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts will open its 2020 summer season of live theater in May with the 1993 comedy The Vast Difference (May 8-17) by award-winning actor Jeff Daniels. The play presents the tale of George Noonan, a flight attendant with five daughters, and his quest for a vasectomy. Along the way he deals with his increasingly frantic wife, the ghost of his father, a “man’s man” who worships the Detroit Tigers and despises his son’s career as a “stewardess,” a wry female urologist with a twisted sense of humor, and a chorus of male figures who serve to amplify George’s anxieties and insecurities.

The Vast Difference will be the opening production of the 2020 Season, with rehearsals set to begin in March.

The Miser, Molière (2018)

2020 Shakespeare in the Sangres

Westcliffe Center
for the Performing Arts

Imagine an evening of Shakespeare in an outdoor amphitheater, watching the sun set over the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as you enjoy a family picnic on the lawn followed by a superb performance. Come early, bring your chairs, blankets, and picnic. Put these performances on your 2020 calendar for June and July now!

Tragedy and comedy will both be represented with Jean Anouilh’s Antigone and William Shakespeare’s Much Ado about Nothing.  The two plays are scheduled to run in repertory for Shakespeare in the Sangres June 12 – July 5, in the amphitheater behind the Feed Store.

Antigone – Noted French playwright Anouilh adapted the Antigone of Sophocles the better to reflect the dilemmas of maintaining personal honor under an authoritarian regime, and its first performance was in 1944 in Nazi-occupied Paris.

Much Ado about Nothing – Benedick and Beatrice spar with a society set up to reward corrupt men and crush innocent women. However, even more notably, they spar with each other, and have served as the theatrical and literary model of “witty lovers” for hundreds of years, inspiring other writers from William Congreve to Jane Austen.

Shakespeare performances are included in season tickets. Tickets to single performances also are available.

Call for Shakespeare Volunteers

Each season WCPA /Jones theater welcomes new actors, musicians, and costumers for our Shakespeare in the Sangres productions. There are always a number of small and sometimes larger roles to fill, especially for men. If you have always wanted to try your hand at acting in Shakespeare this is your chance. We also have a large costume shop but we always need volunteers to help choose, make or remake costumes for our productions. If this sounds like an interesting opportunity for you to get involved in these exciting productions, please email your availability, willingness, and experience, and we will be in touch. Who knows you might become one of our newest stars!
