The Call Board for the Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts is where we post important announcements of WCPA activities open to the performing arts community. For added visibility, these announcements also are posted in the lower left column of each page on the website so that everyone has an opportunity to see them. Current call board announcements are for Shakespeare volunteers, summer internships offered each year by WCPA, and the Ten-Minute-Play Competition, also an annual WCPA activity.

Call for 2020 Summer Internships for College Students
The Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts regularly provides summer internships for qualified drama students at its facility at the Jones Theater in Westcliffe, Colorado. Many former interns have said that it was the best summer experience they have ever had learning about the theater. Westcliffe is a picturesque small town in Southern Colorado at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
The interns participate in every facet of theater work. In addition, they work with local children for a two-week-long session of our summer Creativity Camp, now in its twenty-eight year. The Creativity Camps consist of theater training for children 7-12 in improvisation, theater games, story telling, makeup, and costume. At the end of the two-week session, the children present original skits, which they have developed with the help of the interns.
Interns also will be involved in one outdoor stage production of: Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and Jean Anouilh’s Antigone. They will have roles in acting or in technical production work such as lighting, set design, building and set decoration.
The internships are limited to three students and run nine weeks from May 10 through July 11. The theater provides excellent housing in its new building, Studio 2, which has a modern, furnished four-bedroom student apartment. We also pay a weekly living allowance. We do not reimburse travel expenses.
Applications must be received no later than March 14. Questions about applications for these internships should be made to Christiane Kimbell Relph, Executive Director, WCPA/Jones Theater by email firstname.lastname@example.org or by mail to P.O. Box 790, Westcliffe, CO 81252. Applicants should include a photo, résumé with relevant theater experience, and audition DVD or video posted on YouTube. Faculty recommendations are appreciated.
Call for Entries: The WCPA 2020 Ten-Minute-Play Competition
The Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts (WCPA) announces its 2020 Ten-Minute-Play Competition, the organization’s eighteenth play competition. The WCPA Play Competition is dedicated to showcasing new works by playwrights and is sponsored by the non-profit Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts in Westcliffe, Colorado.
A panel of jurors from the local and regional theater community reviews submissions and selects, anonymously, the winning plays, which then will be produced by the WCPA’s Jones Theater.
Performance dates, scheduled to coincide with the Sangres Art Council’s Arts Hullabaloo weekend, are Friday and Saturday, September 18 and 19, at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, September 20 at 2 p.m. Cast members will be drawn from the local actors’ group, the Westcliffe Center Players, and directors will be chosen to mount the plays.
Play Submission Guidelines
Submissions consist of a completed submission form, your script, and a $10 submissions fee. We prefer to accept submissions online, but will also accept them by mail, as detailed below.
Each script must be no more than ten minutes in length. The play must be typewritten (or word processed) on 8.5″ by 11″ paper. Include the name of the play on each page and number each page. DO NOT put the author’s name on manuscript pages (evaluations will be conducted blindly), only on the play submission form. The play must be typed in standard play format using one side of each page only.
Each playwright may submit one script—send your best!
The play must be original and not have been produced or published. Previously submitted plays, plays that received an Equity production, musicals (music in a play is acceptable as long as it does not require orchestration), children’s shows, and any unsolicited longer one-act or full-length plays are not accepted and will not be returned or receive a response. Competition is restricted to English language submissions only.
There are no contractual obligations or royalties paid to playwrights whose scripts are selected as finalists or competition winning plays. Finalist plays may be asked to give limited license for productions to be filmed and posted on our website or on our YouTube Channel.
The play must be appropriate for a community theater presentation. Plays are limited to 4 characters or less, and can be set-up and struck within 5 minutes or less.
Please consider general audience appropriate language in your script dialogue. DO NOT SUBMIT “Mature Audience Only” material.
To submit your script and pay the submission fee online, please use our Ten-Minute-Play Submission Form. You will be asked to upload your manuscript in pdf format and pay the $10 submission fee through PayPal. Scripts should be submitted online between the dates of February 1 – June 12, 2020.
Submissions By Mail
Scripts should be submitted between the dates of February 1 and June 12, 2020, and postmarked no later than June 12, 2019. Pages sent by mail should be secured only by a removable stable or binder clip. Send four copies of the manuscript together with your completed Ten-Minute-Play Submission Form and a submission fee of $10 made payable to WCPA Ten-Minute-Play Competition.

Call for Shakespeare Volunteers
Each season, WCPA /Jones theater welcomes new actors, musicians, and costumers for our Shakespeare in the Sangres productions. There are always a number of small and sometimes larger roles to fill, especially for men. If you have always wanted to try your hand at acting in Shakespeare this is your chance. We also have a large costume shop but we always need volunteers to help choose, make or remake costumes for our productions. If this sounds like an interesting opportunity for you to get involved in these exciting productions, please email your availability, willingness, and experience, and we will be in touch. Who knows? You might become one of our newest stars!
