*Dearly Departed
by David Bottrell and Jessie Jones

When Bud Turpin suddenly drops dead one morning at the kitchen table, the rest of his family —widow Raynelle, sister Marguerite, sons Ray-Bud and Junior, their wives, and daughter Delightful—must put aside their differences, grievances, and feuds, and pull together to plan his funeral. With the help and hindrance of their friends, relatives, and other members of the community, the Turpin clan struggles to rise to the challenge of giving Bud a proper send-off. Written and first performed in 1991, Dearly Departed is a hilarious, twisted, and surprisingly affecting take on the Southern way of life―and death.

*The Importance of Being Earnest
By Oscar Wilde

Jack and Algernon are two young English gentlemen of fashion who share an unusual habit: they have created fictitious alter egos that allow them to escape any social obligation they consider burdensome or just plain dull. It is a habit that serves them both well until Jack falls in love, at which point his fake younger brother “Ernest” threatens to take on a life of his own that may destroy Jack’s—and Algy’s—matrimonial hopes. Wilde described this, his most famous play, as “a trivial comedy for serious people.” Trivial it may seem, but its sparkling dialogue skewers the hypocrisies and follies of late Victorian society in a manner as pointed as it is polished, and Earnest is justly considered one of the funniest plays in the English language.

Fridays, June 21 and July 5, 6:30 p.m.
Saturday, June 29, 6:30 p.m.
Sundays, June 23 and July 7, 2:00 p.m.

Adults, $20; students (18 and under) and active military, $15; kids (12 and under), $5.

*2019 Ten-Minute-Play Competition Performances

The Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts (WCPA) announces its 2018 Ten-Minute-Play Competition, the organization’s seventeenth play competition. The WCPA Play Competition is dedicated to showcasing new works by playwrights and is sponsored by the non-profit Westcliffe Center for the Performing Arts in Westcliffe, Colorado.

A panel of jurors from the local and regional theater community reviews plays submitted in the annual Ten-Minute-Play Competition and selects, anonymously, the winning plays, which then will be produced by the WCPA’s Jones Theater.

Cast members will be drawn from the local actors’ group, the Westcliffe Center Players, and directors will be chosen to mount the plays. The audience will have an opportunity to meet authors, directors, and cast of the plays in a “talk back” after the performance.

Performances will be held Friday, September 20, and Saturday, September 21, at 7:30 p.m.

Adults, $20.
Included in season ticket. For competition guidelines and the play submission form, please visit the Call Board.
